BOB DYLAN: Like a Lot of Rolling Bucks
The handwritten draft of Bob Dylan’s “Like a Rolling Stone” has just sold at auction in New York for $2 million, a record for a popular music manuscript. The previous record was $1.2 million in 2010 for John Lennon’s handwritten lyrics for “A Day in the Life.”
The Dylan lyrics were bought by a fan in California who, Sotheby’s auction house says, “met his hero in a non-rock context and bought directly from Dylan.” Sotheby’s adds that the working draft is “the only known surviving draft of the final lyrics for this transformative rock anthem.” It is written in pencil on four sheets of letterhead from the Roger Smith Hotel in Washington, D.C.
Dylan recorded the song in 1965 for his Highway 61 Revisited album.
