Norman Nowling

A 40-year-old Fort Myers man was arrested Saturday for running over a car with his four-wheel drive vehicle at a Punta Gorda recreational vehicle hot spot.

Norman Lee Nowling was booked into the Charlotte County Jail on one count of criminal mischief. He was released after posting a bond of $2,500.

According to a Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office report deputies received a call just after 5 am from a 16-year-old female who said her car was damaged. The girl and her 37-year-old father went ‘mudding’ at the Red Neck Yacht Club on Bermont Rd. and parked her 1995 Toyota Corolla in a nearby field.

The girl was chatting with some folks at one of the facility’s mud pits when she was told that a few drivers in large four-wheel drive vehicles had destroyed a small car by running it over.

When she soon realized the damaged vehicle was hers she contacted security. A security guard told a CCSO deputy that he witnessed a large crowd gathering around the car encouraging two drivers to run it over.

People were heard yelling ‘The owner doesn’t care, you can do it,” one witness told investigators. Two drivers attempted to run over the Corolla’s hood but couldn’t and left. A short time later a man with ‘spiky hair’ driving a white camouflaged van with five-foot tires came by.

The driver of the van put the front tire of his vehicle on the car smashing its hood. He then backed off, went to the other side and placed his other front tire on the hood of the Corolla.

Witnesses say he drove over the vehicle several times. One of them directed deputies to the suspect at a nearby campground. Nowling, who refused to make any statements, was arrested and transported to the Charlotte County Jail.

No other information about this incident is available at this time as the investigation continues.
