Review: New Scorpions CD Comeblack

Last week, a friend asked me to check out the new Scorpions CD “Comeblack.” The CD features 13 songs, 7 re-recorded Scorpions tunes, 6 cover songs.

I like the fact that the Scorpions didn’t just put together a “hits” cd with past recordings; they actually went into the studio and re-recorded their hits. And they all sound good. Great in fact! The production is a little different than the originals but its solid, not over produced. Rudolf Schenker can still wail on guitar and Klaus Meine’s vocals sound good but he can’t scream like he used to.

The band picked out some great covers to pay homage to those who influenced them. I liked the remakes of Ed Cobb’s Tainted Love and The Kinks All Day and All of the Night. The cover of the Beatles Across the Universe was pretty straight forward, not really many changes and to me it sounds like a cover band trying to cover the Beatles. The other covers including Ruby Tuesday and Tin Soldier just fell short for me as well. I’m not a big fan of cover’s to begin with, but I liked that the band picked out some songs that not everyone re-records.

Overall, it’s a good record. The Scorpions still rock! The fact that Klaus can’t hit the high notes like he used to was the deal breaker for me. I like the originals better just based on the fact that I want Klaus to hit that high note in Rock You Like a Hurricane. If you’re a big fan of the Scorpions you’ll love it.
