  • The Watts riots raged for 5 days and killed 30 people.
  • The first draft cards are burned.
  • The first commercial communications satellite is launched.

  • Charlie Brown and the Peanuts Gang appear on the cover of Time Magazine.
  • A Charlie Brown Christmas, the first Peanuts television special, debuts on CBS, quickly becoming an annual tradition.
  • Movies: “My Fair Lady” wins 8 Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. “Mary Poppins” takes home 5 Oscars. Julie Andrews wins an Academy Award for Best Actress

  • Winston Churchill: November 30 1874 – January 24, 1965 he was the first person to become an Honorary Citizen of the United States.
  • Nat King Cole: March 17, 1919 – February 15, 1965 On November 5, 1956, The Nat King Cole Show debuted on NBC-TV. The Cole program was the first of its kind hosted by an African-American, which created controversy at the time
  • T.S. Elliot: September 26, 1888 – January 4, 1965 awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1948.

  • Barry McGuire, born 15 October 1935
  • At age 16 he joined the United States Navy, but was discharged ten months later for being under age.
  • According to McGuire, "Eve of Destruction" was recorded in one take on a Thursday morning (from words scrawled on a crumpled piece of paper) and then he got a call from the record company at 7:00 the next Monday morning, telling him to turn on the radio - his song was playing.
  • A former New Christie Minstrel gone solo.
