• Wild Cherry was really a hard rock band.
• As the story goes…Wild Cherry had a regular gig at the 2001 Club in Pittsburgh,and with Disco big at the time, their sound didn't go over well. After one show, an audience member shouted, "Play some funky music, white boy." Frontman Rob Parissi decided they should, and wrote down the phrase on a bar order pad. They recorded it with a Disco sound.
• Parissi got the idea for the group's name from a box of cough drops he saw when he was in the hospital.
• The song sold over two and a half million copies in the US alone; it was Wild Cherry's only hit.
• Here’s Wild Cherry and "Play That Funky Music" the Number 1 at 1 from September 1976.
