MEN AT WORK: Hay's "Down Under" EP Will Celebrate Song's 30th Anniversary

Men at Work frontman Colin Hay will release an EP of three newly recorded versions of the group's "Down Under" exclusively via iTunes next Tuesday (July 31st).

Men at Work frontman Colin Hay will release an EP of three newly recorded versions of the group's "Down Under" exclusively via iTunes next Tuesday (July 31st). As we reported Friday, the EP -- which is being released to celebrate the song's 30th anniversary -- features an acoustic reworking by Hay, a re-mix of the original master and an extended live version by Hay. None of these contain the controversial flute part that became the basis of a bitterly contested 2009 lawsuit against the song's co-writers -- Hay and the group's then-guitarist Ron Strykert -- for allegedly plagiarizing the folk melody “Kookaburra Sits in the Old Gum Tree.”

Hay's new version has also been chosen by the Australian network provider Telstra as the theme for their Olympic games advertising campaign. Hay is featured in a series of 30- and 60-second commercials singing the song with groups of various sizes, ranging from people on the street to a children’s chorus up to a football stadium of 60,000.
