Eddie Talks About Dave.

VAN HALEN: EVH Opens Up on DLR and WVH

The best parts of the interview Eddie Van Halen did for the new issue of Esquire magazine never made it to print, but they have turned up online. They include comments on his relationship with David Lee Roth and the role his son Wolfgang played in the making of their new album, A Different Kind of Truth.

On re-recording old demos for the new album:
"That was kind of purposefully done... We figured, why not give fans the era that they liked, but not the whole album is that. It's just like a third old, a third middle and a third new. There's a lot more that was never recorded."

On Wolfgang sifting through and picking out the old tracks:
"There were so many songs. Wolfgang wanted to do a ton, and I said, 'It's going to be a double record!' He goes, 'So? Let's do a double record! Let's convince Dave!'" It ended up being a single disc.

On David Lee Roth:
"We never really hated each other. I think the press blew that out of proportion. He did kind of blindside us by leaving -- we certainly weren't ready for that. But if we argued -- it's always about the structure of a song. It's never personal... He has his own vision and he's very opinionated, which is good... There's nothing worse than having four guys who have no clue... Compared to the last tour we're a lot closer... It feels more like a band, and it is more of a band. It's family to me. Always has been."

On the songs he wrote with Sammy Hagar that have not been released:
"That's some great music. They're just on vacation, maybe. They're off to college and they're going their own way. Who knows?"

Van Halen are in Greensboro, North Carolina on Saturday.
