JOURNEY: Would Welcome Perry Back With Open Arms?
In a perfect world, there's no doubt Journey would work again with singer Steve Perry, but guitarist Neal Schon hasn't had any contact with him since the band got its star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2005.
In a perfect world, there's no doubt Journey would work again with singer Steve Perry, but guitarist Neal Schon hasn't had any contact with him since the band got its star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2005. Schon says, "To this day I don’t understand why we can’t just pick up the phone and talk.”
After Perry and the band parted ways in 1998, one of the singers they thought of hiring was Michael Bolton. Schon says, “Michael was a little eccentric. I played the solo on his version of Otis Redding's 'Sittin’ on the Dock of the Bay," and he made me re-do my solo about 200 times. [But] we thought about him for a second. Michael definitely had pipes -- he was pretty bionic when I worked with him. But even then there was a lot of personality clashing. I didn’t feel we would get too far.”
Journey are now on their third singer since Perry, Arnel Pineda, who they found on YouTube. They're on the road on a bill with Pat Benatar and Loverboy, and play Ottawa, Ontario tonight (Wednesday) and Bangor, Maine on Friday.
