PINK FLOYD: Show Them the Money

Pink Floyd's Nick Mason, members of Radiohead and Annie Lennox are speaking out against the European Union's new copyright law. They've signed a letter accusing the European Commission of "breaking promises" to tackle missing payments. Artists, producers and writers are supposed to earn royalties every time their music is played on radio or television, or in public spaces. The money is collected by more than 250 societies around Europe, but the Commission says many of them hold onto "substantial amounts" of that cash, which means the artists are owed billions of pounds. The artists feel that figure is actually much higher and claim the societies have no incentive to pay up quickly because of the returns they can make on the money in their hands.
