The long-awaited Janis Joplin bio-pic is one step closer to reality -- Tony award-winning actress Nina Arianda has signed on for the lead role and will sing all of Joplin's music. Director Peter Newman, who's been working on this project for 12 years, says, "I've never in my life seen an actress walk on a stage and convey the duality of vulnerability with overheated sexuality, which is what Janis was all about.
Simply titled Joplin, the film will focus on the last six months of Janis's life, though it will also include flashbacks to her early career. Newman has secured the rights to 21 of her songs, as well as the arrangements by Joplin's backing band Big Brother and the Holding Company.
Janis died from a heroin overdose in 1970. She was 27. No word on when the film will be out.
