GRATEFUL DEAD, THE BAND: Lesh Pays Tribute to Helm

Ex-Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh paid tribute to the late Levon Helm Thursday night at his new venue, Terrapin Crossroads in San Rafael, California. Lesh and a group of musicians that included The Black Crowes' Chris Robinson and Adam MacDougall played The Band's 1969 self-titled album in its entirety, followed by the Dead's Workingman's Dead.

The night was the first of what Lesh is calling his "West Coast Ramble," inspired by the time he performed at Helm's Midnight Ramble two years ago.

Rolling Stone re-printed a speech Lesh gave before the performance, in which he said, "I'd like to dedicate not just the show, or the next show, or everything we do here, but the whole place, to Levon Helm."
