BEATLES: Liverpool Plans to Celebrate Their 50th Anniversary

Unlike The Beach Boys or Rolling Stones, The Beatles have never firmly established what year they began. To some fans, 2012 might be their 55th anniversary if you trace their beginnings to the 1957 church picnic where John Lennon first met Paul McCartney. Maybe it's the 52nd, if you point to the year when The Quarrymen became The Silver Beatles and first played Hamburg, Germany. Liverpool's tourist industry prefers to circle 1962, when the boys signed with EMI and saw their first single "Love Me Do" become a smash hit.

Now, they're lining up a series of events to mark that golden anniversary:

  • In June, The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra will perform The Two of Us: The Lennon and McCartney Songbook over two evenings to salute the world's most famous songwriting duo, Lennon and McCartney.
  • International Beatles Week, August 22nd through the 28th, will mark the 50th anniversary of the Beatles first performance at the Cavern Club as bands and fans from around the world descend on the city.
  • A Love Me Do Weekend , honoring the release of "Love Me Do," is set for the weekend of October 5th through the 7th.
  • A John Lennon Peace Vigil will take place December 9th at the European Peace Monument in its new home near the ECHO arena, marking 32 years since his death on December 8th, 1980.
