A new book on David Bowie takes a different approach to the iconic star. Author Peter Doggett says his newly published The Man Who Sold the World runs counter to past works about Bowie's life that "always downplay the really interesting thing about him" -- his music.
Doggett adds, "Just in terms of the sound of the music, the range is incredible." It goes from the Led Zeppelin mold to Beatle-esque melodies, glam rock, R&B-influenced pop and swings toward elements of new wave by the end of the decade.
Doggett says, "In the back of his mind, I'm sure he always wanted a hit record. But at the same time, he was brave enough to say, 'I'm going to make music that doesn't sound commercial and see if you like it.'"
