THE BEATLES: Meet With the Pre-Champ
50 years ago today in Miami, February 18th, 1964, during their first visit to America, The Beatles stopped by the Fifth Street Gym to visit with boxer Cassius Clay, who was training for his heavyweight title bout with Sonny Liston.
Though he had not yet changed his name to Muhammad Ali, even then Clay had a gift for gab and poetry when he said, "When Liston reads about The Beatles visiting me, he'll get so mad I'll knock him out in three."
After the photo op, which John Lennon said made them look foolish, the Fabs headed to the beach for a little relaxation. A week later, on February 25th, Clay won the title when Liston couldn't continue after six rounds.
