THE BEATLES: It Was 50 Years Ago Today... |
|
The wheels were set in motion 50 years ago today for The Beatles to become the biggest music act in history when they auditioned for producer George Martin at EMI, the U.K. parent company of Capitol Records. After spending three hours listening to their music, including such originals as "P.S. I Love You," "Love Me Do" and "Ask Me Why," Martin recommended the label sign them with one important stipulation -- they replace drummer Pete Best. They did, grabbing anotherLiverpoolfriend, Richard Starkey, a.k.a. Ringo Starr. Ironically, when they recorded "Love Me Do" later that September, Martin hired session drummer Andy White while Ringo played tambourine.
