RONNIE MONTROSE: Remembrances

A few more artists are remembering guitarist Ronnie Montrose, who passed away on Saturday at age 64. Though no cause of death has been announced, Montrose had been fighting prostate cancer for the past five years.

KISS says Ronnie was a "great guitarist and friend of the band... His first band album, Montrose, remains a classic, and his influence can be heard in numerous contemporary guitarists. We will miss him and send our condolences to his family."

Michael Anthony, who became friends with Montrose through original Montrose singer Sammy Hagar, says, "Besides being one of rock's early guitar icons, he was a friend and big influence on the way we wanted the first Van Halen album to sound like. I remember all of us wanting Ted Templeman, who produced the first Montrose album, to make us sound big like them. Van Halen opened for Ronnie on a bunch of shows during our first tour in '78, and I've jammed with Ronnie numerous times since. He was always great to hang with and very dedicated to his craft. My condolences go out to his family, friends... Ronnie, you touched all of us."
