THE WHO: At Least 14 Ticket Takers

At least 14 Rhode Island-area fans of The Who still have tickets from their canceled 1979 show in Providence and have redeemed them for seats to their show there on February 26th.

At least 14 Rhode Island-area fans of The Who still have tickets from their canceled 1979 show in Providence and have redeemed them for seats to their show there on February 26th. The offer was made by Lawrence Lepore, the general manager of the Dunkin' Donuts Center, which in 1979 was called the Providence Civic Center. That show was canceled by then-mayor Vincent Cianci Junior over safety concerns after 11 Who fans had been stampeded to death in Cincinnati a couple of weeks earlier. The 1979 tickets have been donated to the Rhode Island Special Olympics, which will auction them off this month on eBay. The top ticket price then was $12.50. This show, $143.65.

This new show, The Who's first in Providence since that 1979 cancellation, will be the last U.S. date on their Quadrophenia tour. They'll kick things off in November in Florida.
