BEATLES: Protected Status for John and Paul's Childhood Homes

The British government has announced that the childhood homes of John Lennon and Paul McCartney -- where the duo wrote some of their earliest songs -- will be preserved. British Heritage, the organization that oversees historic buildings, announced that Medips, where John lived with his aunt and uncle in South Liverpool, and a Forthlin Road rowhouse where Paul's family resided have been granted Grade Two status. This means they cannot be altered without local government approval.

Spokesperson Emily Gee said the homes were granted special status since "they were scenes of huge amounts of rehearsal, of composition of songs, really intense creative hubs."
