A Gerhard Richter painting owned by Eric Clapton has sold for $34.2 million at auction.

Eric Clapton's bank account has grown substantially after a 1994 Gerhard Richter painting he owned sold at a London auction on Friday for $34.2 million, which was $15-million more than the pre-sale estimate. The price set a new auction record for the German abstract artist, whose previous record was $21.9-million set last May in New York. The new owner of Clapton's piece remains anonymous after a more than five-minute bidding competition between two telephone buyers.
