There's a dispute between Bob Dylan and historians at PBS about who has the famed "Dylan goes electric" guitar.

The guitar that Bob Dylan caused a ruckus with when he plugged in and went electric at the Newport Folk Festival is still causing controversy 47 years later.

This time the beef isn't from folk purists disillusioned by their hero going rock; it's a dispute between Dylan and historians at PBS about who has the famed instrument.

The daughter of a pilot who claims to have flown Dylan to the historic gig, says she found the guitar -- along with some handwritten lyrics -- in the family attic, where it has sat since Dylan left it in her father's plane. A lawyer for Dylan, however, claims that Bob still has the Fender Stratocaster he used during the historic performance.

Experts think the axe would sell for as much as $500,000 if was put on the auction block, but that's not likely to happen if Dylan still has it, as his lawyer, Orin Snyder, claimed late today (Wednesday). "He did own several other Stratocaster guitars that were stolen from him around that time, as were some handwritten lyrics," he says. "In addition, Bob recalls driving to the Newport Folk Festival along with two of his friends, not flying."

However, experts on the new PBS show History Detectives claim the guitar owned by Dawn Peterson, the pilot's daughter, is the real thing. The controversy over the instrument will be the focus of the show's season premiere on Tuesday.
