THE ROLLING STONES: Garfunkel, Faithfull, Browne & Others Pay Tribute |
|
A multi-generation collection of rock, country and blues artists came together in New York last night to salute The Rolling Stones. The Carnegie Hall show, which raised more than $100,000 for music education programs, featured Jackson Browne, Ronnie Spector and Ian Hunter among the headliners. Art Garfunkel brought the crowd to its feet -- his take on "Ruby Tuesday" marked his return to the stage for the first time since vocal cord paresis forced cancelation of his 2010 tour with Paul Simon. Marianne Faithfull, Mick Jagger's onetime music brought an emotional high point when he delivered a bluesy take on the song he wrote for her, "As Tears Go By." Fellow '60s icon John Sebastian sizzled on harmonica during Roseanne Cash's performance of "Gimme Shelter." Younger artists such as Jackie Green and Peaches impressed, as did actress Juliette Lewis, who proved herself a capable singer on "Satisfaction." As 21 stars delivered the 21 songs from the Hot Rocks compilation in their original sequence, the only thing missing from the gala were the Stones themselves. Setlist:
