NEIL YOUNG: The Nitpicker Is Sober

Neil Young is profiled in this Sunday's New York Times Magazine ahead of next Tuesday's publication of his memoir, Waging Heavy Peace. He says he's been completely sober this past year while he wrote the book and recorded two albums with Crazy Horse. "The straighter I am, the more alert I am, the less I know myself and the harder it is to recognize myself. I need a little grounding in something and I am looking for it everywhere... I did [drugs and alcohol] for 40 years. Now I want to see what it’s like to not do it. It’s just a different perspective." As for how he is to work with, Young says, "The fact is that I can be really irritable when I’m unhappy about stuff. I can be a nitpicker about details that seem to be over the top. But then again I’m into what I’m into, so a lot of people forgive me because of that." Young is in Hershey, Pennsylvania on Saturday for this year's Farm Aid concert.
