THE BAND: Remembering Rick & Richard

Levon Helm's Midnight Ramble tomorrow night (Saturday) at his Woodstock, New York home-studio will be a tribute to two of his former bandmates in The Band -- Richard Manuel and Rick Danko.

Billed as A Musical Nod to Richard and Ricky, Levon will be joined by The Band's Garth Hudson along with guitarist Jimmy Vivino and others. Missing will be the only other surviving member of The Band, guitarist Robbie Robertson. Although very familiar with The Midnight Ramble, Robertson and Helm no longer speak as Levon feels he never got his fair share of songwriting credits and royalties. Robertson holds no animosity though, saying, "I love those guys and I love what we did together." When asked if he would ever play again with Levon and Garth, he says, "I rule out nothing."

Richard Manuel hung himself while on tour with the post-Robertson Band in Florida in 1986. Rick Danko died of heart failure in 1999.
