BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN: Like Uncle Like Nephew
Jake Clemons was injured, but he's still on tour.
E Street Band saxophone player Jake Clemons is not only taking after his late uncle Clarence Clemons when it comes to blowing the sax, but also in the injury department. Jake was wheeled out on stage in a wheelchair this week in Dublin and carried to a stool on the horn riser with Bruce Springsteen, telling the audience that his back had gone out while sneezing the night before. Unable to move around the stage and clearly in pain, the younger Clemons still managed to do his solos and stand up for his "Born to Run" solo. Springsteen referred to Clemons in "Spirit in the Night," singing "Crazy Jakey got really hurt," and then sang the last verse while sitting on a stool next to Jake.
During the last years of his life, Clarence Clemons suffered from bad knees and hips and had to be lifted onto the stage in an elevator. He died last year following a major stroke.
Springsteen's European tour continues on Saturday in Oslo, Norway.
