JOE WALSH: Remembering Levon

Joe Walsh has been paying tribute to Levon Helm on his tour.

If you've been to one of the shows on Joe Walsh's Analog Man tour this summer then you have seen his moving tribute to the late Levon Helm, the singer and drummer in The Band who died in April. Walsh has his back-up singers perform Bob Dylan's "I Shall Be Released," while footage of Levon is shown on the video screen.

Walsh and Levon were both part of Ringo Starr's first All-Starr Band tour in 1989 and Walsh says Levon was not only a friend, but an influence. One of his funniest memories is when he and Levon staged a prank fight for the tour's promoter, David Fishof. They pushed and shoved each other and let the curse words fly before Levon cracked a breakaway sugar bottle over Walsh's head, who then popped a blood capsule. Walsh tells us, "It was a mean thing to do to somebody, but boy was that funny." That first tour also featured The Band's Rick Danko, Clarence Clemons and Billy Preston, all of who are also deceased. Nils Lofgren and Dr. John rounded out at line-up.

Walsh continues his tour on Friday in Hampton Beach, New Hampshire.
