THE KINKS: We Really Got Them 50 Years Ago Today
“You Really Got Me” was released 50 years ago today (Monday).
“You Really Got Me,” the third single by The Kinks, and arguably their signature song, was released in their native England 50 years ago today (Monday), August 4th, 1964.
Written by singer Ray Davies, it features that legendary guitar riff created by his brother Dave, which came to be after Dave sliced the speaker cone of his guitar amplifier with a razor blade and poked it with a pin. The song reached number-one on the U.K. singles chart the next month, remaining there for two weeks. It was released in the U.S. on August 26th, 1964.
In 1999, “You Really Got Me” was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. In 2004, it landed at number-82 on Rolling Stone‘s list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All-Time and, in 2008, at number-four on its list of the 100 Greatest Guitar Songs of All Time.
