BEATLES: Ringo and George’s Help!Coats Bring in Big Money at Auction
The cape-like jackets worn by two of The Beatles in Help! brought in eye-popping prices at a Liverpool auction this week. The BBC says the distinctive garments from the collection of director Richard Lester brought in a total of $190,000 — with the one worn by George Harrison going for $100,000 and the worn donned by Ringo Starr, 90k. Keep in mind, the pre-sale valuations were less than half that.
The piano from Twickenham Film Studios on which John Lennon and Paul McCartney wrote the melody for “Help!” — and Paul used for “Yesterday” — brought in $95.000.
There was also to be another similar jacket — allegedly worn by McCartney — included in the sale, as well as some handwritten lyrics. But Sir Paul got a legal order to stop that sale — as “[his] lawyers have claimed that Paul would never have given any clothing away.”
