When U2 did their initial wave of promotional appearances last fall in support of their new album, Songs of Innocence, it was primarily just Bono and The Edge. On the occasions where they were required to perform, they would do a stripped down version of “Every Breaking Wave” with The Edge on piano. (A version of the tune performed that way was included on the deluxe edition of Songs of Innocence.)

Now they have gone back in and reworked the song, which was originally scheduled to be the first single on an album they were recording in 2009 called Songs of Ascent. Bono re-recorded his vocals, while the arrangement has been slowed and strings have been added in an attempt at radio airplay and having it appeal to females.
