RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS: Why They Went Unplugged at the Super Bowl
After various websites ran photos showing that Flea’s bass and the Josh Klinghoffer’s guitar were unplugged during the Red Hot Chili Pepper’s Super Bowl halftime performance, Flea felt the need to come clean on the band’s website.
Flea explains the NFL’s policy dictates that vocals could be live “but bass, drums and guitar would be pre-recorded…There was not any room for argument on this, the NFL does not want to risk their show being botched by bad sound, period.”
He adds that although the Chili Pepper’s don’t usually do “any sort of miming,” the band discussed it and eventually decided “it was a surreal-like, once in a life time crazy thing to do and we would just have fun and do it.” Flea says the band could have plugged in and faked it to avoid the controversy, but “thought it better to not pretend.”
Ending his note, Flea says he’s grateful to the NFL and Bruno Mars for inviting the band to play and noted, “I would do it all the same way again.”
