Cheap Trick‘s Rick Nielsen helped out aspiring musicians in his hometown of Rockford, Illinois on Sunday.

Nielsen was the main attraction at a benefit for the Music Academy of Rockford, which raised well over $10,000. He brought along his son Miles as well as other children and grandchildren for a performance to raise money for Academy scholarships. Nielsen also took questions from young Rockford musicians.

Before the performance, Nielsen admitted to the Rockford Register Star that he was a bit nervous. He said, “This is not what I do. I’m not a public speaker. I’m a guitar player, songwriter, knucklehead. The knucklehead I got down. The guitar playing I got down. This, I don’t know.”
