Neil Young is supporting a Kickstarter for an unusual environmental initiative.

Young appears in a video for Rainforest Connection to help raise funds for an interesting program. Old cellphones are retrofitted with a solar-powered energy source and placed in trees around the rainforest. When they pick up the sound of chainsaws, animals in distress or gunshots, they alert authorities. Young says, “[This] is a technology that’s a connection between the rainforest and you. This technology enables the forest to talk to the world. When the forest is threatened, the forest can speak and you can hear it.”

Young knows how to bring in funds from Kickstarter — his Pono Music company raised $6 million earlier this year.
