Jim Morrison‘s life and work is explored in a both a new book and an upcoming documentary film.

Shaman’s Blues: The Art & Influences Behind Jim Morrison & The Doors by Denise Sullivan, which came out last month, looks at the effect the blues, in particular, had on Morrison and the band’s music, while also discussing such other artistic forebears as the French poet Arthur Rimbaud.

The crowd-funded documentary Before the End: Searching for Jim Morrison attempts to answer the question, “Who was Jim Morrison, really?” by concentrating on his “formative years, childhood through college.” Family and friends — “who experienced him as a person, as opposed to a persona,” according to directors Jeff and Jess Finn — make up the bulk of the interviewees, at least in a preview that has been up on YouTube for some time.
