“Good one, Chad Smith! You got us.
Last weekend, the Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer told a reporter at the Guitar Center Drum-Off that the band was planning to cover Led Zeppelin‘s ‘Dazed and Confused’ with Bruno Mars during the Super Bowl halftime show on Feb. 2, but what a lot of people failed to pick up on (ourselves included) was that Smith was specifically referring to the live version of the song — as in the ‘Dazed’ that was known to take as much as 45 minutes out of Zeppelin’s set list.
Smith cleared it up during a recent interview with KROQ, chuckling that instead, the Chili Peppers planned to cover the first side of Rush‘s ’2112.’
“Obviously I can’t tell you what we’re going to do, it would ruin the surprise,” he added. “Come on, you gotta watch! It’s gonna be great. Bruno Mars . . . [and] his band are great people. Today I’m going to rehearse with them outside in the beautiful weather here in New Jersey. It’ll be a real spectacle, I’m looking forward to it.”
Meanwhile, comedian Jon Daly got in on the prank fun, posting a fake new Chili Peppers song titled ‘Abracadabralifornia‘ that mimicked the band’s sound while thumbing its nose at some of the more easily parodied elements of their shtick. You can’t fool all of the people all of the time, but you can always fool a few, and ‘Abracadabralifornia’ probably tricked more than its share.
One thing that’s no joke: Smith’s Super Bowl drum set, which is being auctioned off to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation. “The wonderful people at Pearl that make my drums made me a custom giant drum kit, because if it’s the Super Bowl, you’ve gotta go big,” Smith told KROQ. “It lights up and changes colors and has all of the NFL team logos on it. Through the NFL and Make-A-Wish we’re going to auction it off to the highest bidder, and of course the money will go to that charity. I’m happy to do it.”
