BILLY JOEL: In a Garden State of Mind
The Billy Joel season at New York’s Madison Square Garden starts tonight (Monday), as he plays the first in his one-show-a-month residency.
Asked how he’ll make these shows different each time, he tells us, “We’re just gonna do what feels good. I don’t expect the audience to go insane for every song. But if we enjoy what we’re doing, I think it’s gonna make a difference on stage. I don’t want to be on automatic pilot. I want to have an edge up there.”
Joel has performed at the Garden 46 times since 1978. This new arrangement makes him an official Madison Square Garden franchise along with the New York Rangers of the National Hockey League, the New York Knicks of the National Basketball Association and the New York Liberty of the Women’s National Basketball Association.
Joel has announced a show a month through September. The dates are:
•May 9th (his 65th birthday)
