With Sammy Hagar‘s new ‘Lite Roast‘ acoustic album coming out this week, we thought this would be the perfect time to take a look in the Red Rocker’s personal file and dig up a few lesser-known facts about the Chickenfoot frontman.
These days, Sammy parties with Joe Satriani, Michael Anthony and Chad Smith — a.k.a. the other guys in Chickenfoot — between solo records. But decades before he teamed up with them, Hagar fronted another supergroup whose sole album may not have burned up the charts, but remains a cult favorite for discerning rock fans. Which was it? Watch the above video to find out.
We also discuss Hagar’s entrepreneurial streak, which kept him financially secure well before he founded the popular Cabo Wabo Tequila line, Sammy’s Beach Bar Rum, Sammy’s Beach Bar & Grill, or the Cabo Wabo Cantina. Even in the early days of his career, Hagar knew how to make a buck, and we take a look at some of his earliest investments here.
Of course, the best way to get rich in rock ‘n’ roll is to write a hit song — and Hagar did that too, recording a track that didn’t do much for him when he included it on a couple of his earlier solo releases, but ended up hitting the Top 10 for another artist in 1981. What’s the title of the song in question? You’ll find out here.
Finally, in this edition of You Think You Know Classic Rock?, we look back at the aftermath of David Lee Roth‘s split from Van Halen — and how, when Hagar took over the band’s lead singer spot, Roth gloated that while Hagar would end up having to sing ‘Jump’ every night, Roth would never sing a Sammy Hagar song. As it turns out, he already had, and we’ve got the proof right here. You think you know Sammy Hagar? Watch out video and find out.
